Winter Festivals

At the Holy Nativity, we burn the palms of last Palm Sunday. At the fire, we sing as the angels to the shepherds who were by the fires tending to their sheep: "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace and good will toward men!"

In honor of Christ's baptism in Jordan with the apearance of the Holy Trinity, we bless water in honor of that Theophany and are rejuvenated by those waters in refreshment of our own baptisms.

May the Lord who has appeared bless and keep you+

RECENT ACTIVITY - NOVEMBER 2011

Father John-Brian blesses the youth whose birthday was in November 2011 (above). We are blessed with young people and gave thanks on Thanksgiving Eve as is our annual tradition. Baby Nehemiah receives Holy Communion (below).

We are one of the churches listed in an article in the community paper "Northside News." In an article in the December 2011/January 2012 edition entitled "Faith in Action," our portion (page 21-22) begins with the heading

"Holy Transfiguration centers on prayer."

The article quotes Fr John-Brian on page 22:
"We are constantly praying for the whole Northside community," said Rev. Fr. John Brian Paprock. "In our worship we are constantly celebrating 'God with us' as we pray for those around us. That's what we, as Christians, believe Christmas is all about," he added. ...

OPF Conference Reflections II

It was an honor for my wife, Teresa, and I to act as host to the OPF Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. It was a very good conference that almost doubled as a retreat. The topics, speakers and movies were not just thought provoking, but emotional experiences and inspirational opportunities. I doubt anyone who attended conference, left the conference with the same ideas of forgiveness they came with. If not radical change, then an evolution of the very notion of forgiveness.

Working as a night chaplain the Sunday night after the intense and full conference on forgiveness, I sat to write down a few thoughts and ended up writing a prayer.

A Reflective Prayer on the Topics Raised at the 2011 OPF-NA Conference

Lord, release the heavy burdens of the past. They are nearly too much for me to bear.

Lord, unlatch the belted, unlock the chained and loosen the double-tied knots.

At one time, or one moment, long ago, it seemed important for me hang on to an event or two - but now there are too many, taking energy from the present, taking joy from good times ahead of me, robbing me of strength to persevere.

Before, I thought I could bear the world upon my shoulders, endure every hardship, and overcome any obstacle

Now, I am crying with fear and exhaustion: my heart, my back, my legs, even my neck is strained with the weight of wounded moments and haunting intimidations.

Now, I am crying with despair and anxiety that Your forgiveness and Your healing of my body mind and soul may only be temporary and I will always bear this heaviness - and that even Your Holy Angels cannot protect me from further injury, injustice, infirmity; that the enemies of my soul will prevail and I will be lost.

Lord, release the pain of my childhood, the heartache of my youth, the despair of middle-age. Lord, so often I have failed in relations, failed in projects, failed in ministry to others, failed in the practice that could bring me closer to perfection. I have let the injury and wounds of others bind me. I have allowed their callous disregard to justify my shortcomings; their intentional back-biting and gossip to encourage my fear and anxiety, exacerbating the pain of sensitive scarring from deep wounds of the past.

Lord, release me from the trivial and the intense bound to me by heavy chains and by light fiber strings. Help me to feel Your healing breath upon my soul, Your single and simple breath can bring my whole being to refreshment and the aches of my bones and of my heart shall melt away.

The burdens I have taken and the burdens that have been given shall be released with the subtle whisper of Your lovingkindness. My fears and anxieties will be crushed under the wings of Your mercy.

And in my mind and in my heart, I know I am wholly Yours - everything is from You and nothing could exist without your allowance. You have given me the free exercise of mind and body and will. I have felt Your tears as You have waited for me to ask for Your divine assistance; as You waited for my surrender to the eternal springs where I will never thirst; to reach for that which You have graciously and freely given for me to truly partake of the eternal bread so that I will be sustained - forever.

You have waited, O Lord, but You do not need to wait any longer.

Please, Lord, come to my aid and help me. Send Your angels to have charge over my life so that everything I may do may be for the glory of Your Holy Name. Heal me O Lord so that I may have strength to continue the course of the journey You have set before me. Fill my mind and my heart with Your love, so that Your ministry may be received by Your servant and that Your will may be fulfilled.

Lord, give me a forgiving heart and help me to be forward looking, letting the past bury the past. Help me to keep my eyes on the gates of Your kingdom so that every step I take moves me in the proper direction.

OPF Conference Reflections I

Dear Friends,

It was I who remarked that our conference seemed to constitute a "think tank" on the topic of forgiveness. What an extraordinary convergence of those dedicating their lives to peace and reconciliation. I felt deeply honored to have been a small part of the OPF gathering. And indeed, I learned how Orthodoxy closely relates to Buddhism. Perhaps the particular practitioners of the Orthodox Church who belong to OPF may relate more closely than others of Orthodoxy to our engaged Buddhist practice in the tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. (I have often heard my teacher speak of his friend Jim Forest.)

This is also to thank Father John-Brian and his Ethiopian-American parishioners for the wonderful Ethiopian lunch feast and coffee ceremony on Friday. What a privilege to sit with that radiant family and break bread. I felt so welcomed to Madison and to the Conference. Father John, if you will, please forward their address.

Yet I admit to coming away with a heavy heart. Not until Saturday evening had I seen the film about Kim. Sitting next to Do while viewing on a large screen the unspeakable tragedy of children burned to death and maimed by napalm was wrenching. I could hear behind me the sobs of a young Iraqi vet.

Do took my hand. I was sick afterwards. I could only say to Do (literally having born witness to his suffering) "I am sorry. I am so sorry."

What strikes me this morning as I think about forgiveness, is that the very word conjures up a separation between the forgiver and the forgiven. What I learned through experience with the murders of my own family was: not until I felt absolutely intertwined with the perpetrator was forgiveness possible.

The Native Americans call this walking a mile in the moccasins of the enemy.

The Buddhists call this experience the emptiness which contains all things.

Not until the edges between myself and the other are blurred can we be truly reconciled.

We can only walk in the shoes of the other. We can only bear witness. We can only raise money, dig wells. We can only minister to the sick. We can only attend the dying, visit the imprisoned. We can only throw straw on the mud.

We can only forgive the perpetrators. We can only continue to "lavish our love" on the many who continue to cause suffering, endure suffering. In that regard, I thank you for bearing witness to my own suffering, the degradation of having three people murdered in my family--something I share with Do, although we did not discuss it.

Home in Black Mountain, in these beautiful Southern Appalachian mountains, I want to cultivate joy and encourage gratitude for the opportunity to live simply and sanely, that God may make use of me in the world. Every moment is precious. There is work to be done. You have modeled this for me. You are an inspiration!

Mission Hospitality for the Orthodox Peace Fellowship

Orthodox women of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission welcomed the Orthodox Peace Fellowship to Madison, Wisconsin with a traditional lunch and coffee ceremony on Friday, September 16, 2011. A representative group of OPF staff, members and conference speakers had a warm and relaxing welcome.

Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission women, Wieni Tesfamichael and Suset Monat, helped with a wonderful welcoming to Orthodox Peace Fellowship conferees who arrived early for lunch before the actual conference began in th evening of September 16, 2011. The lunch was traditional Ethiopian fare, cooked by Wieni and other women of the mission. with Suset making the traditional coffee ceremony. Fr. John-Brian gave a blessing for the food and the gathering. Alex Patico, the Secretary for the Orthodox Peace Fellowship - North America and conference organizer (pictured upper right) was especially appreciative.

Both Fr John Brian and Teresa participated in the program along with Lynn Siewert and Christopher and other friends of our mission who were attending due to mission outreach to them. Fr. John Brian led an opening prayer and introduced the International Forgiveness Instiute founder, Dr. Robert Enright, who was the keynote speaker. Teresa introduced Milwaukee attorney Erin Manian, who spoke on "The Armenian Genocide and Forgiveness." Fr John Brian also introduced the Saturday morning speaker Very Rev. Fr. George Morrelli of the Antiochian Archdiocese. The entire conference program was a mix of secular and religious views of forgiveness. Teresa wrote an article about the conference for the Orthodox Peace Fellowship internationla newsletter. Christopher (and his friends) recorded most of the speaker sessions.

On Sunday, a few of our mission families joined many conferees in visiting Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Madison.

It was an honor for our small community to be involved in such a spiritually and socially significant event as the Orthodox Peace Conference annual North American conference.

Annual Picnic

Once again, the morning rain gave way to a beautiful day;

a wonderful day for the sharing of the fruits of our mission.

The blessing of fruit ceremony was lovely with incense and holy water, bells ringing.

The children enjoyed kite flying and other games. It was a great day for a picnic.

We thank the Lord for bringing good people together in His Love for everyone.

Many of the congregation volunteered for the summer fundraising event for Clinic At A Time, a charitable organization benefitting Ethiopia by upgrading rural medical clinics.

Essential Ascension

Without the Ascension, there is no proof of unity with God. And yet, it is promised that we will be with God in His kingdom to come.

Fr John Brian explores this mysterious event recorded in the scriptures as an essential moment in spiritual development as well as a signal of hope for everyone.

Reflecting on the reading appointed for the Sunday of Ascension, the end of John Chapter 17, Fr John Brian reminds us that Christ came to be like us so that we might become more like Him through the power of the cross.

This sermon uses the English translation of the Aramaic by Lamsa. The Aramaic Bible, also called the Peshitta, was written in the original language of Jesus and his apostles. This sermon lesson uses the readings and services appointed from the Malankara Syrian lectionary and was given on Sunday, June 5, 2011 by Fr.

O Lord God, Maker of all beings and Creator of the visible and invisible creation, Who established the mansions of light for the dwelling of the heavenly hosts and by Your goodwill You created the second world. Also you created the light first of all in order that the whole creation be filled with it. You stretched the heavens like a curtain, decorating it with the beautiful stars; You laid the beams of Your chamber in the waters and made the clouds Your chariot. You laid the foundation of the earth carefully on the waters and decorated it with different kinds of blossoms; and by the water which comes from above, You cause the different kinds of fruits to grow, and by the springs which become running rivers, You water the surface of the earth; and through Your divine dispensation, You provided the whole creation with the necessary provisions in order to keep alive all species that You created.

Then You created man in Your own image and in Your own likeness; making him the king of Your creation. When he fell down from his great office, through his negligence, You brought him back to his divine rank by Your coming in the flesh, washing away, by the second birth, the impurity which had defiled him.

Do You, even now, O Lord, Who have brought us to this hour, be with us and among us by driving away from our souls all the darkness of ignorance.

Fill us with the light which is beyond the world, guiding us unerringly to the all-perfect Light which, beyond all understanding, proceeds from the Holy Trinity.

Enlighten our minds by the rays of Your light, that we may be worthy to become children of light.

May Your Holy Spirit, by indwelling upon these waters, turn them into a fount of healing; fill them with the gifts of holiness that they may be a source of help for those who receive them.

Set us free from disgraceful passions.

Blot out our sins; make white our stains and cleanse our defilements; wash us thorougly that we may become whiter than snow, that we may be pure and worthy of Your light.

Make us worthy to stand with confidence before Your dreadful seat of judgment and to receive Your mercies and loving-kindness and to stand at the right hand of your majesty; make us wholly arrayed in Your light, even in the likeness of Your Godhead, for you alone are the Giver of divine gifts.

While some Orthodox Christians (Ethiopian Church, et al) still celebrate the Nativity of Our Lord according to the Julian calendar, which places December 25 thirteen days later -- on January 7 -- most Orthodox Christians (Malankara Orthodox Church, etc.) in the world observe the feast according to the Revised Julian calendar, which places the Nativity on December 25.

Why are there two days for celebrating Christmas?

Christmas is always celebrated on December 25! But which day is December 25?

Some Orthodox celebrate Christmas on December 25 of the older calendar (Julian calendar), some celebrate on December 25 of the revised calendar (Gregorian calendar). December 25 in the Julian calendar is January 7 of the Gregorian calendar. The Julian calendar is named after Julius Caesar. The Gregorian calendar is named after Pope Gregory.

The Julian calendar has a leap year every 4 years. The current Gregorian Calendar does not have a leap year in those years ending in “00” where the hundreds-part is not divisible by 5 -- and thus 1900, 2100, 2200 ... etc., are not leap years. In both calendars the year 2000 is a leap year.

The Gregorian calendar (sometimes called the Revised Julian Calendar) was adopted as the secular calendar in 1585 in parts of Western Europe, in 1753 in England and North America, and 1923 in Russia.

For example, George Washington (1789-1797) was born on February 11 old calendar (i.e., before 1753). That is why his birthday is celebrated on February 22 (“Presidents Day”, new calendar). In his times, the difference between the old and new calendars was 11 days.

The two days when Christmas is celebrated drift apart an extra three days every 400 years. December 25 in the Julian calendar becomes January 8 in the Gregorian calendar starting in the year 2100.

ADDITIONAL NOTE (by Fr John Brian): Our sister Armenian Church celebrates a combined Holy Day of Christmas and Epiphany on January 6. In addition, the Coptic calendar (and thereby the Ethiopian/Eritrean calendars) has an interval exception when Christmas is celebrated on the “Gregorian” January 6th, still the equivalent of December 25.

Subject: One Man's Advent Reflection

First, much of this has been said before and better. Second, I write for
myself and for no one else. And finally, I write from the perspective of an
apartment in the cold snow-blanketed American Mid-west, in a country where
Orthodox Christians are an inconspicuous minority. Your country, climate,
customs and calendar may be very different. Indeed, I hope that much of
them are.

Today, feeling truly sick in body as well as a bit in mind and spirit, I was
forced to slow down and reflect on the ancient wisdom of the Church in this
season. The holiday invitations I got in my e-mail did not make me feel any
better. This season is not Christmas, it is Advent. The Church has wisely
designated this time as weeks of fasting and spiritual preparation.
In Holy Tradition, with many local variations, the celebration of the
Christmas season lasts for 12 days, from the Feast of the Holy Nativity
(Christ Mass) until the celebration of the visit of the Three Kings or Wise
Men from the East and the celebration of Christ's baptism in the Jordon,
where a dove descended on Him and a voice cried out from heaven saying, "You
are my beloved Son." Christmas is linked to Epiphany, God's revelation in
the world. The Christmas season and celebration begins on the night of the
Holy Nativity.

In modern America, however, the Christmas decorations go out on store
shelves by Halloween (at the end of October). The next big holiday is
American Thanksgiving, the last Thursday in November (a feast rightly
celebrating God's abundant harvest and true human friendship). The merchants
launch the Christmas season the day after Thanksgiving, when shoppers take
off like racers out of the starting gate, requiring special provisions at
some stores to handle the crowds. This is followed by a round of parties
sponsored by nearly every business and organization, secular and religious,
plying us with abundant food and drink, extra-ordinarily high in calories,
sugar, salt, dairy, meat, and alcohol. (This in a society where few of us do
manual labor in the cold and our number one health problem is how we eat-to
the point that average American lifespan is falling--and our doctors are
telling us to reduce calories, sugar, salt, dairy, meat, and alcohol for the
preservation of our physical lives!)

Then by afternoon on Christmas Day, and certainly the day after that, on the
Feast of St. Steven, drivers will start to see Christmas trees, shorn of
their ornaments, dumped forlornly on the street curb. Christmas is done and
over. Then follows the big emotional let down, millions of people depressed
in the darkest coldest days of winter.

And Christmas Day, The Big Day, was never like that in the wonderful sugary
scenes depicted on Christmas cards that Americans exchange in such abundance
it overloads our postal system. Instead, Christmas reminded my father of
the death of the sister who raised him; this Christmas may be my mother's
last on this earth. That is not just my story. That is the true Christmas
story of every household.

So how do we Orthodox Christians in lands that are not predominantly
Orthodox Christian keep ourselves physically, mentally, and spiritually
healthy? 1) I am not going to every party I have been invited to. 2) We are
bidden by Holy Scripture to fast in private, going out in good clothes, our
skin oiled. I intend to dress up, put on my skin moisturizer, be the good
guest, accept one little piece offered and eat it with joy and gratitude,
and no more. 3) I am intending to keep my home and business life as simple
as possible-that is an even greater challenge in fasting than in food. If I
do not do that, I become physically ill. 4) I am giving some time to
spiritual reflection and seeking opportunities to assist those who have less
than I do.

And then, 5) during The Great Twelve Days of Christmas, when my friends are
caught in the winter gloom of cold, snow, darkness and emotional let-down,
invite them to celebrate with me the Christmas season as the Holy Church in
its great wisdom as taught us to do, lighting one small candle in the
darkness.

Let us remember one another in our prayers.

Orthodoxy and Mission in State Capitol

We have a table display in the Wisconsin State Capitol building through Friday, December 10, 2010. The two themes of our display are "Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission" on the left (white background) and "What is Orthodox Christianity?" on the right (dark background). Literature and icon cards are made available to anyone along with information on Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, the faith and the practice as well as our current chapel schedule. Teresa Kochamma re-furbished an older display of Orthodox Churches in Wisconsin that was used in previous years. This installation is part of Interfaith Awareness Week in Wisconsin and is part of the displays of world religions in the Capitol for the week. There is another group's display next to Holy Transfiguration's. All around the rotunda, around the "Holiday Tree" that graces the capitol every year, are other religious group displays as well. At noon on Friday, December 10, 2010, there will be an event there and Fr John Brian is introducing the key note speaker, Dr Charles Cohen, director of the Lubar Institute for the Study of Abrahamic Religions.

Prayer for the Nativity Lent

O our Lord Jesus Messiah, the Son of God who was born of Woman and had bruised the head of the evil Serpent, and was seen as the son of Abraham on the earth and had opened the doors of mercy for all generations of the world!

Accept this lent fast that we observe to the glory of the feast of Thy Nativity like the offerings of the kings from the East. Together with the angels who adored Thee at Bethlehem on the day of Thy Condescension and with the humble shepherds who bowed down before Thee in their simplicity, make us worthy to offer worship to Thy Worthiness on the holy Christmas day.

By Thy enlightening light of Truth, on this ephemeral era of Thy first advent in meekness, help us to live a life adorned with the garments of light leaving aside all forces of darkness. Thus, O our Lord and God! May we be risen up for eternal life on Thy glorious second coming and along with Thy Holy Mother and all saints and angels to raise praises to the majesty of the Holy Trinity!

Indian Orthodox Church

Parumala/Kerala/India: Installation of Baselios Marthoma Paulose II, the eighth Catholicos of the East from Malankara took place at Parumala.

Newly consecrated Catholicos, Baselios Marthoma Paulose II is the eighth Catholicos since the Catholicate of the East was relocated to India and 91st Catholicos in the lineage of Catholicoi of the East in the apostolic throne of St. Thomas. He is also the 21st Malankara Metropolitan of the church.

At 6.30 am all Metropolitans have ceremoniously accompanied the Catholicos into the Church and the day’s event began. Metropolitan of Chengannur Diocese Thomas Mar Athanasius celebrated the Holy Qurbana. Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Didymus I was the chief celebrant for the consecration ceremony.

“At the inception of Catholicate in Malankara the first Catholicos was named as Paulose I. Now at the centenary of the Catholicate the Catholicos is again being called Paulose, precisely Paulose II. This is not a coincidence, but a great plan of God”, said the Principal of Orthodox Theological Seminary, Fr. Dr. K.M. George.

New Catholicos readout and put his signature on his confession of faith (Amalogia), which the new Pontiff himself piously submitted to the Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Paulose II.

Thereafter the reigning Catholicos declared that the new Pontiff is worthy to be elevated to the Catholicate and to the throne of St. Thomas. This led to reading of the Gospel, with Metropolitans carrying the throne, on which the new Catholicos was sitting. This was to symbolize the authority of the new Catholicos over the Church of God. Staff for the new Catholicos was also handed over in a similar fashion, where nine Metropolitans held their hands below the hand of the New Catholicos, which was guided to the top by the reigning Catholicose.

Concluding the ceremony, litanies were read out, which were prayers for and divine felicitations to the new Pontiff.

Newly installed Catholicose Baselios Marthoma Paulose II completed the Holy Qurbana to mark the end of ceremony.

Priest Trustee Fr. Dr. Johns Abraham Konattu was the Master of Ceremony. Fr. M.P. George led the melodious choir.

Around 25 Metropolitans attended the event. A number of priests and thousands of faithful witnessed the historical ceremony.

Fr John Brian and Kochamma were honored with the opportunity to pray and light candles at Orthodox Churches in the Los Angeles area at the end of September and beginning of October 2010.

Fr John Brian was asked to speak at the Orthodox Peace Fellowship conference at St Paul's Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine where they attended Great Vespers and were able to venerate the relics of the Holy Unmercenary St Panteleimon and St Kyriakos.

They also visited the newly consecrated St. Thomas Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Whittier where Fr John Brian said evening prayers. Mathew Varghese and his son were angels who blessed their visit.

Blessed by an opportunity to visitSt. Leon Armenian Orthodox Cathedral and St. Ephrem Syriac Orthodox Cathedral, both in Burbank, they lit candles. Fr. Kyrillos was the gracious host for memorial prayers at St. Marina Coptic Orthodox Church in Irvine/Santa Ana.

They also visited other religious sites while site-seeing, including a few of the Cailfornia Missions outside Los Angeles and Mary of Angels Catholic Cathedral downtown.

Interfaith Dialogue was the theme for the 2010 Orthodox Peace Fellowship conference that was held October 1-3, 2010 in Irvine, California (a suburb of Los Angeles). The conference was hosted at St Paul's Greek Orthodox Church. Among the speakers was Holy Transfiguration priest-vicar, Fr John Brian. For a list of all the recorded speakers, scroll down.

Recordings were made at the conference by JBP et al with Christo doing audio editing. Entertainment and film screenings, including the discussion following those presentations were not recorded. Also, the business meeting was not recorded. The dialogue sessions were the longest and were broken up into two or three parts, depending on length. Finally, these are not professional recordings and a couple were recorded on cell phones or in the dining hall (which was not conducive to audio recording with the simple digital recorder available).

Mulu's mother died unexpectedly

It is sad to report the unexpected death of Mulusew's mother, Etoyeh, in Ethiopia from natural causes Tuesday night (September 21, 2010).

Mulu's mother was like a mother to our mission when she was here. She went back to Ethiopia for a few months and had been looking forward to returning soon.

Mulusew and Muluken left promptly for Ethiopia to attend her funeral. They will return in two weeks. The boys are still here and plan on attending church this weekend.

Amma Etoyeh was a dear and sweet blessing to all of us and she will be missed. Our condolences and prayers are with the entire Mulu family.

We will be having the traditional third day memorial service for Amma Etoyeh on Friday evening, September 24, 2010, 6:00 PM, at the mission chapel.

The 40th Day will be on November 1st.

O Lord, may Etoyeh abide in the bosom of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, where all the righteous dwell. And make her memory be eternal! May the entire Mulu family, and all who are grieved and in sorrow, be under the comforting shelter of Your wings. Amen+

Banchi Wolde: A Special Tribute for a Special Daughter of Holy Church

Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission joined the Mission Society of St Gregorios of India in 2001. After a couple of years, Fr. John Brian asked Mission Society founder and Indian bishop, Thomas Mar Makarios, if the Madison mission should reach out to the Oriental Orthodox in the area. Madison still has the only Oriental Orthodox priest between Lake Michigan and Minneapolis.

So, Fr John Brian asked a few priests in diffferent parts of the country how to begin outreach. An Ethiopian priest and an Armenian priest both suggested send invitations to people driectly from the phonebook. And Fr John Brian, being a servant, sent an invitation card to each of the Ethiopian and Armenian names that he could find in the local phonebook, praying for God's angels to deliver them into the proper hands.

Banchi Wolde received one of those invitation cards, as she recalled, "I couldn't believe it - an invitation to a church of my own faith! So, I went and I have been blessed for coming ever since."

"Banchi has been a blessing to our mission and to the whole community in the Madison area," said Fr. John Brian during the special tribute for her at the annual mission picnic on August 8, 2010. "She has been an elder, a guide and a guardian for the Orthodox faith and for our mission," he said. And she will be missed.

"As you return to Ethiopia in your retirement, always remember that there are people who love you in Madison. May God bless you on your journey as He has already blessed us with you," Fr John Brian concluded the toast said at the picnic. The non-alcoholic sparkling cider was both festive and refreshing. Banchi received a blessing for retirement and a gift of an icon from the mission.

Banchi Wolde retires to Ethiopia. She will always have a place in the heart of Holy Transfiguration Mission

Banchi was given a framed icon of the Holy Trinity as a reitrement gift from the mission. Fr John Brian explained the Holy Trinity icon design of Andrei Rublev to Banchi and those present. Banchi requested this be written down. The icon represents the physical appearance of the Holy Trinity described in the Old Testament at the episode of Abraham's hospitality to three angels. In the icon, they are sitting at a table being fed with bread and wine. One is blessing the offering in the manner a priest consecrates the gifts for Holy Communion. The tree of Mamre can be seen in the background along with Abraham's home. Rublev's design has a quality that has endeared this icon to all Orthodox. "As you stand before it, you can see cleary all three angels and the table in front of you. But most importnantly, you can see there is always room for you at that table. There is always room for you to be in God's presence," Fr John Brian said.

Everyone is welcome to attend our tenth annual mission picnic. This is the tenth year in a row that we have held a picnic on or about the festival day of Holy Transfiguration (trad. August 6). We have usually held it after Sunday church services. We have always had shelter, so, rain or shine, we will be there! Hope to see you there!

These beautiful children, dressed in traditional Eritrean attire, are looking forward to the picnic this year. There will be lots of fruit (that will be blessed), games, face painting, crafts and traditional singing with the big drum.

Rev. Fr. John-Brian Paprock is an American priest serving a multi-ethnic Orthodox Christian mission parish in Madison, Wisconsin. He has been involved in ecumenical and interfaith efforts in the community for over 15 years, participating in 1988 in one of the oldest continuous dialogue groups, Madison Interfaith Dialogue group, soon after its initial meeting. He has president of Madison Urban Ministry in 1990 and was the religion reporter at WORT-FM in the early 1990s. AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY:

REV. FR. JOHN-BRIAN PAPROCK

Born in Mexico City, Rev. Fr. John-Brian Paprock has lived in the U.S. all of his life, from coast to coast. He studied at Columbia University and other fine institutions of higher learning, eventually getting a Master of Theology degree in Comparative Theology from Trinity College. He has been certified as a pastoral counselor. He has been awarded several honorary degrees as well. Ordained to the Orthodox priesthood in 1987, he joined the Mission Society of St Gregorios of India under the leadership of Metropolitan Thomas Mar Makarios – of blessed memory – in 2001.

Rev. Fr. John-Brian serves as vicar of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission, which is multi-ethnic and multi-lingual Oriental Orthodox Christian Chapel in Madison, Wisconsin. He also serves as a chaplain locally at University of Wisconsin Hospitals & Clinics and at HospiceCare Inc. He has led workshops, seminars and retreats on various religious and spiritual topics, including Eastern Christian meditation. He is a published journalist, photographer, shown artist and author of several books, including “Neighbors, Strangers and Everyone Else” and “Living in the Eighth Day.”

Rev. Fr. John-Brian is the founder of Interfaith Awareness Week and has been active in local ecumenical and interfaith activities since 1988. He has received several awards for his community and volunteer efforts over the years, including Middleton’s “Good Neighbor Award” in 2008. He is married to Teresa and has a son, Christopher.

The Raising of the Cross

Every year, the Raising or Exaltation of the Cross is celebrated throughout Orthodox Churches. It is celebratory of the continuation of Christianity when Helen, the mother of Emporer Constantine found the Cross of Christ in Jerusalem where it was buried. The raising up of the cross from its burial place in the 4th Century was a monumental moment that was symbolic of the rising of Christianity beyond the persecuted minority that would not be diminished. In the 4th Century, the first of the Church councils was convened and the Nicene Creed was formalized becoming the Symbol of Faith for Christians throughout the world.

In our mission parish, we have a procession with the altar cross. A four fold blessing in the four directions is said with the cross in the midst of the chapel.

From the Ma'de'dono - the Book of Church Festivals:

+ O Son of God, Who by Your Cross, delivered Your Church, grant her Your peace and keep her children by the Cross of light.

+ May the peace, which reconciled the heavenly hosts and the dwellers on earth, bring peace to Your Church and keep her children by the Cross of light.
+ The Wood of the Cross went up from Jeruslaem, and was honored in all the places through which it passed.

+ Glory to the Father Who hid the Cross from the oppressors,

+ Worship to the Son, Who revealed it and showed it to Constantine.

+ Thanksgiving to the Holy Spirit, Who handed it down to us by Helen, under its arms keep us, O Lord, from all harm.

Ge'ez~Ahmaric Prayers Now Monthly

MONTHLY PRAYER IN GE'EZ~AHMARIC ARE ON THE LAST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH AT 6:00 PM. EVERYONE IS WELCOME.

Starting this summer, three young men have taken leadership for Saturday evening prayers and devotional songs in Ge'ez~Ahmaric at the chapel. Brhne, Mengist and Elias will be rotating leadership. More Summer 2009 Mission Activties

Derek, Francine and their son, Yohannes, visted. They are converts to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and enjoy visiting and supporting our mission efforts. Derek is orginally from Barabados. Francine, from the island of Dominica in the Caribbean. Yohannes was born in Chicago, where they travel from to grace our mission. Some may remember Derek gave a presentation for our mission on the Orthodox Church in the Caribbean a few years ago.

Another activity of the summer in Madison area, is moving. Being the home of a major university, it makes sense that by the end of summer hundreds, maybe thousands, actually change theior residence or move to Madison from somewhere else. In Holy Orthodoxy, we practice the blessing of homes. One blessing of a home was for Brhne and Rahel's new home (above).

God truly blessed us on an unusual summer day in Madison, Wisconsin. It was a cloudy day with 90 degree temperature and thunderstorms predicted. The clouds remained, but the cool breeze from the lake kept the festival very comfortable - and the rain waited until we were packing the cars to go home!

Tenth Anniversary of A Return to Ministry and Mission

This week marks the Tenth Anniversary of my return to ministry, to active priesthood, to mission work. After a seven year leave of absence, returning ten years ago was different than following my assignment after ordination. I was older (and older still) but hopefully more mature in my understanding when I returned.

It would be two years after this before joining the Mission Society of St. Gregorios of India. I had no idea of what the Lord had rekindled or what He was directing me to do.

I had no great expectations in 1999 and it is good to see and be reminded of my initial steps of blind faith in God and His Hand in my return.

I found the program that was printed for my "return" vespers. I also found the text of the initial sermon I gave at that occasion. I thought I would share it.

I would certainly enjoy hearing from anyone who has benefited from this ministry and mission during the past ten years.

Please pray for me and for this work - even after ten years, the fields are full, but the workers few.....

Holy Transfiguration & Return to Active Ministry
Festal Vespers Program
Celebrant: Reverend Father John-Brian Paprock

August 5th, 1999 evening

Transfiguration is one of the Great Feasts of the Festal Calendar and is always celebrated throughout the Orthodox Church on August 6th. It commemorates the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, when the divinity of Christ was revealed to the three holy apostles who recorded that Jesus Christ was seen conversing with Moses and Elijah.

Traditionally, Orthodox services were completely chanted (only occasional prayers were spoken by the priest). This made for services that would last entire days without interruption. People would come and go as their bodies and souls dictated. To shorten the services for the unique character of modern Americans, many hymns are read. At times, if the chant is difficult to sing, a reader may read a hymn instead even though music is provided.

The entire theology and spirituality of the Orthodox Tradition can be heard through the services. Listening to the various hymns that will be read tonight can give insight into Christianity and into the Truths of the Great Feast of Holy Transfiguration.

The Blessing of the First Fruits (traditionally grapes) demonstrates the integration of Orthodoxy into the regular cycles of life. It is traditional to receive the celebrant’s blessing at the end of the service and to take a bite of the abundance of the fruit of our labors.

Dear Friends,

As you may or may not know, I was pastor of the Chapel of the Holy Transfiguration here in Madison for five years before my leave of absence (in 1992). Among the many facets of that ministry was a local newsletter that had the title of “These are Transfiguration Times.” That title seems as relevant for this time as it was seven years ago.

Although I have been reinstated to the Holy Priesthood of the Orthodox Church, I am still in the process of discernment. My call to ministry includes community in the most ancient of Christian traditions. I am dedicated to bring whatever healing and encouragement I can to individuals, groups, and the Church. Every chrismated (confirmed) Christian has a ministry. I hope to be honored in assisting and developing a Eucharistic community of Christians discovering and realizing their ministries in these “Transfiguration Times.”

There is a lot of work to be done and I hope you will support the ministry and join in the labor. Please feel free to contact me. My phone number and email are below.

There are so many who have sent their prayers and loving support from across this country. I would like to thank those that could not be here for their spiritual support and good wishes. Many thanks to my wife, Teresa - without her loving support and encouragement, I would not be returning to ministry. Thanks to Peter Scott Rawson for his enthusiasm and support. Local church members to attend memorial sculpture unveiling

A delegation of members of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church, Madison, Wisconsin will attend a dedication ceremony at Alma College, Michigan, on Saturday, May 16, 2009, during which a figurative sculpture representing the spiritual ideals of the late Bishop Thomas Mar Makarios will be unveiled.

Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church is a small multiethnic Malankara Orthodox Syrian mission parish that meets at 621 N. Sherman Avenue, Suite B3, (Madison, Wisconsin) on Sunday mornings. More information about the church is available by calling 608-242-4244. Since 2001, it has been a mission parish of the Mission Society of St. Gregorios of India founded by Bishop Makarios.

Bishop Makarios, who had been the bishop of the Mission Society of St. Gregorios of India until his death, was also a much-beloved professor of religious studies at Alma College who passed away in February 2008. In his 25 years at Alma, he introduced students to Indian philosophy and culture and helped develop the Alma India Program, which has a relationship with the Mathen Mappilai Memorial Public School in the village of Ayroor in the state of Kerala.

Many Alma students have performed volunteer work at the school over the years. In addition, the Bishop was a prelate of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India. He was founder of the American Diocese and the first Metropolitan Bishop of Canada, UK and Europe, and South Africa.

Following his passing, an Alma College campus committee selected Michigan artist Mark Chatterley to create a campus sculpture that memorializes the Bishop's impact on the faculty and students of Alma College.

"Mark Chatterley's figures have a very timeless, universal feeling to them," says Carrie Parks-Kirby, faculty artist and committee member. "Even though he never knew or met the Bishop, he took our descriptions and came up with a sculpture that is very fitting and descriptive of our former friend and colleague."

The sculpture depicts a central figure with wings standing, arms raised and palms together in a prayerful gesture. The wings, at close inspection, are made up of figures that get progressively smaller.

"This beautiful work of art provides a fitting and enduring reminder of the Bishop's legacy at Alma College, in his beloved church, and in the world religious community," says Alma President Saundra Tracy.

"It's a beautiful image for a leader of a church and teacher who impacted so many individuals," says Parks-Kirby. "The sculpture is not a likeness of the Bishop but represents his spiritual wisdom, love and leadership of the people around him."

The clay sculpture cast in bronze will be located at the center of the Alma College campus along a sidewalk amidst a grove of evergreen trees.

Alma College is a selective liberal arts college committed to academic excellence and development of responsible leaders. Alma's undergraduates thrive on challenging academic programs in a supportive, small-college environment emphasizing active, collaborative learning and close student-faculty interaction. The College offers coursework in 28 majors, plus pre-professional programs in law and medicine.

In addition to India, Alma College also offers international study and research opportunities in Australia, Austria, Ecuador, England, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Peru and Scotland.

In Midwest America, only one other Indian leader has a dedicated public statue: Mahatma Gandhi in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Since 2006 recorded sermons and talks at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission in Madison, Wisconsin have been offered on-line. Since the sermons and talks are almost all extemporaneously given, there is no text and no notes for these sermons.

Starting with an initial request for recorded sermons from a member who moved from Wisconsin to California, this has evolved from cumbersome attempts at cassette tape recording to audio podcasting and on-line listening.

With close to 200 on-line audio sermons and talks available (downloaded over 10,000 times worldwide), Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission ministry is regularly shared from its small chapel in Madison, Wisconsin USA to places around the world. Buddhists Nuns Among Recent Visitors at Chapel

Buddhist nuns from the Joyful Path Healing Center in Blue Mounds visited the chapel on Sunday, February 9, 2009. Pictured to the right of Father John Brian are Menma-La and Ngawang Gema. They were visiting in concert with an interfaith program they have initiated "I Take the Vow - Committing to Non-Violence" where they are asking spiritual leaders from different faith communities to come and speak on topic of peace and true nonviolence in body, speech, and mind. Father John Brian was recommended to Joyful Path as a representative of the Christian Faith, based upon his commentaries and involvements. He will be speaking at the center on Saturday March 21, 2009 at 10am. The Joyful Path Healing Center event is open to anyone. Click here for more information on this event. Mission: A Healthy Church

Orthodox Christian mission in America can be challenging. But when a recent article in "Christianity Today" focused on the three principles of a healthy church, it was a delight to see how these principles are at the core of Holy Transfiguration mission parish.

In the article, "Denominational Diagnostics: What I Look For to Find a Healthy Church ," Philip Yancey visited all the churches in his area that were in the local phone book. He noticed three qualities of a healthy church: diversity, unity and mission or purpose.

First of all, unspoken in the article – but obviously an indication of a healthy church – is its openness and accessibility to visitors. Being in the phone book is obviously a good way to let people know that an Orthodox church is in their backyard, but we also depend on those who attend our services regularly to spread the word to their friends and relatives that our unique congregation is an option for them.

Then, Yancey pointed out that he could sense an "aliveness" in a congregation that had very little to do with theology. This seems an important consideration for Orthodox churches and mission parishes to pay attention to. Yancey equates "aliveness" to congregational health. From his perspective as a visitor, WHAT was taught was not as important as HOW it was taught. But "how" wasn’t a style of worship or a liturgical tradition; it was demonstrated in who was welcome and how parishioners interacted with each other and the community beyond the Sunday gathering.

DIVERSITY: From the beginning of the Church, Yancey reminded us, Christians were welcoming of different economic classes, divergent ethnicities, cultures and races. Holy Transfiguration mission parish is a singularly multiethnic and multiracial congregation in our community. Our small mission has individuals and families across the economic spectrum, and people who are from countries around the world. People are accepted as created uniquely by God and having unique life experiences which are treasures to the community.

UNITY: Yancey wrote that diversity can only work with a shared common vision. Holy Transfiguration utilizes English as a common language for visitors as well as the Orthodox Christian immigrants and residents, who come from diverse lingual backgrounds. The use of English also helps those first-generation Orthodox Christians, born in America, who have not learned the language of parents and grandparents well enough to understand the powerful spiritual teachings of Holy Traditions of the Church. This includes the songs, hymns, and prayers, many of which have been within Orthodox services since the beginning. The experiential nature of Orthodox liturgy and prayers unifies Orthodox Christians with a common vision shared in Holy Communion (Korban).

MISSION: "Saddest of all are those churches whose vision does not extend beyond their own facilities and parking lots," wrote Yancey. Holy Transfiguration mission parish takes service to the community seriously, contributing to just and needy causes regularly with small grants (as there has been availability of resources) and volunteerism – locally, nationally and internationally. The mission priest, and his wife and son, lead by example in hours of volunteer service and out-of-pocket donations.

"In my visits," Yancey concluded, "I never found a perfect church (nor should we expect to, if the New Testament gives any indication). But when tempted to judge, I simply remind myself that disappointment with the church traces back to God’s own bold experiment: to allow ordinary people like us to embody his presence on earth."

Indeed, Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission in Madison, Wisconsin is honored to be among the non-perfect as God shapes and molds the mission and ministry into a better vehicle for His mercy, light and love, and is honored to be a healthy congregation in service to contemporary America while retaining the wholeness of Holy Orthodoxy.

Orthodox Priest Wins Community Award

Rev. Fr. John-Brian Paprock, a Chaplain in the UW Hospital Spiritual Care Services Department and at HospiceCare, received the "Middleton Good Neighbor Award" in a ceremony at the Good Neighbor Festival on Sunday, August 24.

GNF Committee President Rich Schmidt said the committee voted "unanimously and without hesitation" to present the award to Rev. Paprock, who was nominated by retired Boy Scout Troop 940 Scoutmaster Ron Berman, with whom he worked for many years.

Schmidt said Rev . Paprock "is truly an asset to our community."

Rev. Paprock, priest of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church, was honored for his community volunteer service including:

* Activities with the Middleton Boy Scouts since his son Christopher became a member. Rev. Paprock was Cubmaster of Middleton Cub Scout Pack 540 (and maintained the website at the time). Since then he has done a great deal of volunteer fundraising for the pack/troop such as face-painting, dunk-tanking, and working at Brat Fest.
* Volunteering in the Middleton Schools, including doing Art in the Classroom ... speaking to classes about Native American Effigy Mounds ... talking to children at Sauk Trail School about their concerns right after 9-11 ... providing a display at the intercultural awareness day ... and
helping out regularly in the high school library

* Founding Madison's annual Interfaith Awareness Week 10 years ago and bringing the event to Middleton two years ago ... organizing an annual program at the Middleton Public Library that attracts Middleton residents representing a variety of religious traditions - including Sikhism, the Baha'i Faith, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity - for education and dialogue
* Many contributions to the Madison community in years past, including helping to found the Teen Loft ... serving on the religious advisory committee at the Wisconsin Department of Corrections ... founding the Madison Region Chapter of the World Future Society ... serving on the mental health services committee of the local American Red Cross ... serving on the
board of directors of Madison Urban Ministry ... and more.

The GNF Committee gives three Good Neighbor awards each year. The other two awards went to Kathy Olson and to Brenda & Bob Rosebrough. A press release from the committee said "Collectively, these award winners have participated in a staggering number of volunteer efforts ... Nominees must reside in the Middleton area and their contributions to the community should be of sufficient duration to warrant recognition."

People from all around the Madison area came to Burrows Park on Sunday, August 10, to celebrate the annual feast day and picnic for Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church. Over 30 people gathered for the group photograph this year. As always, some did not get in this photograph. My Visit to Transfiguration Mission

[Renu Paul was the personal secretary of our departed Bishop, Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios at Alma College in Michigan. She visited the Mission in Madison June 19-24, 2008 and was kind to offer these reflections of her visit.]

I felt as if I were going to an Orthodox family reunion of sorts when I made a visit to the Transfiguration Mission in Madison, WI in June 2008. Born to parents who raised me in the rich traditions of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India, I am proud to say that my Christian roots can be traced as far back as 52 A.D. when “doubting” Thomas arrived in a small island off the southwestern coast of India to share the gospel message with high-caste Hindus. I inherited the Orthodox faith from these high-caste Hindus who were my ancestors.

Growing up, studying, and eventually becoming an American citizen, I was curious how my Oriental Orthodox faith could possibly be sustained and, perhaps even, be enriched and enlivened in the mainstream society, particularly in a country where materialism and the political guarantees of religious freedom go hand-in-hand. With a panoply of cultures and peoples from all corners of the world congregating in the public square, I wondered how (and if) the beauty and depth of Indian Orthodox Christianity could be shared with others. Would it be feasible outside my immediate ethnic milieu especially since evidence suggests otherwise?

Linguistic, cultural, and religious barriers are pernicious such that they seem to pose a formidable impediment to human progress and growth. When we monitor the political happenings in the world today, national, ethnic, and racial antagonisms—whether it be in Iraq, Israel, Pakistan, Israel, or Northern Ireland—supersede the hope of human unity, no less any sense of religious unity.

After witnessing firsthand how the faithful of the Transfiguration Malankara Orthodox Mission of Orthodox Christian participated in the Divine Liturgy, I have come to the realization that Orthodox Christianity means “global” Orthodox Christianity. There are realistic challenges, of course, but they are, surmountable because of the common unity we have in the figurehead of Jesus Christ, who is our universal Shepherd, and the Church, who is our universal Mother. I am grateful to the Lord who has opened my eyes after my visit to the Mission that “[w]ith God, all things are possible” (Mark 10: 27). I am especially impressed by the able leadership of Fr. John Brian Paprock along with the loyal acolytes on the altar who continue the apostolic tradition handed to us so long ago. The members of the Transfiguration Mission family—from the indefatigable energy of Teresa Kochamma to the devotion of the old and young alike— make this community a vibrant place to worship and be. May God continue to bless and protect His Church.

Introduction to Orthodoxy: visit from Merrimac UMC

On Wednesday evening, May 28, 2008, we were honored to receive the youth group (and its adult leaders) of Merrimac United Methodist Church for a program about our church and mission. Pastor Anita Genrich authorized this visit as part of the youth education at their church in learning about Christian diversity and history. She includes these types of visits as important parts of their catechism curricula. Pastor Anita met Fr John Brian while they both served as fill-in hospital chaplains. An American Faces East: My Journey to the Mission Society

Shortly after our Madison mission became part of the Mission Society of St. Gregorios of India (which is a mission effort of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church) in 2001, a young Malayalee from New York complimented our mission efforts and then detailed all of the issues confronting the Malankara Orthodox Church. After that, he asked: “What did you find in the Malankara Orthodox Church that made you join it? My question is a sincere attempt to learn more about the vast treasure of my Church, which sadly many of my own brethren have failed to see.”

Truly we are honored by compliments and love to hear about the good that can be seen by others, but all honor and praise belongs to God first and foremost who has brought us together. Holy Orthodoxy is a religion of community. It is nearly impossible to be Christian without community as we are One Body in Christ.

All temporal conflicts and separations in that body are wounds that will be healed by the love of our Lord. Like children, we often view our scrapes and bruises as an eternity of suffering. We sometimes deal with emotional problems and difficult times with child-like absolutes that we often regret. We need to always be working for mature wholeness, health and unity of Holy Church. There is a lot of room in God's kingdom for diverse manners and practices. Bishop Kallistos of Oxford has said that "all cultures have a facet of God's intent."

Truly, the Malankara Church is a light from the east that can help those of us in the west to see more clearly the path laid before us. Despite politics and conflicts, the Holy Spirit reaches forth to touch those that wait with wakeful hearts. We must be aware of this lest we begin to believe that God is limited by human conflict and politics. No, God is much much greater.

It is with great mystery that we are allowed to disagree and have dispute with one another. It is a symptom not only of our free will, but of our human frailty as well. In addition, we cannot know if God is working His will in the midst. We can pray for wisdom and love and light to prevail...and it will. When Mahatma Gandhi reached a point of despair, he said something like, "I remember that throughout human history no evil dictator, no vicious regime, no brutal leader has survived. All of them - 100% - have been destroyed. Then I am renewed." If this can be said about greater conflicts and difficulties, then certainly God will free us from "petty politics."

There may be a need to communicate differently; plan differently. There may be a need for mission work within the communities of Indian Orthodoxy, not just outside them. There may be a need for a re-dedication of bringing forth the spiritual nourishment and untold treasures seemingly locked within the Malankara Church. Many see these things.

Two such lights for me were Metropolitans Paulos Mar Gregorios and Thomas Mar Makarios. The soil, the good ground of the Malankara Church, which brought forth such bishops, must be fertile soil indeed. Although you may say there is drought-like conditions, through Mar Gregorios Thirumeni's writings I see fertile ground and trees with deep roots waiting to blossom, waiting to be nurtured to bring forth fruit for all humankind. I bear witness to the sowing, planting and nurturing efforts of Mar Makarios Thirumeni in that garden. I see Christ tilling the soil, gently touching young leaves and sprouts, encouraging new growth and weeding the gardens...

I was led to this church by a dream that came during a period of intense fasting and prayer. Paulos Mar Gregorios simply beckoned me to come his way, assuring me that it would be all right to do so, like one would with a frightened pet. He smiled as he waved me forward. He did not instruct me on what I should do or how I should do it.

Ordained to the Orthodox priesthood in 1987 in a now defunct American mission of the Holy Synod of Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, the only church membership I had known. I took a personal and voluntary leave of absence from active status in 1992. After the initial six months passed, I was placed on “inactive status” according to protocol. Through a series of events that can only be attributed to the Holy Spirit in 1998 and 1999, I was fully re-activated to the priesthood – even before my formal request. It was during that time I entered a retreat for discernment and realized to the depth of my heart that I needed to follow Mar Gregorios Thirumeni as best as I could, even though he had departed to eternal memory in 1996 and what I knew of him mostly came from a few of his books that I had read. I was willing at that time to accept whatever course was to be laid before me. I eventually talked with Fr. Michael Hatcher, Chorepiscopos for the Mission Society, and arranged to meet with Mar Makarios Thirumeni in Chicago in October 1999.

It would be nearly three years following that dream of Mar Gregorios Thirumeni before Thomas Mar Makarios announced our acceptance into the Mission Society of St. Gregorios of India in July 2001. I can only give praise and credit to God for any good that has come from this unusual path. If He has blessed our mission efforts or any of the ministries we have done, then it is only due to the spiritual direction given, even to unfamiliar places to meet with and worship with unfamiliar people in unfamiliar ways – all within the Holy Orthodox Christian Church. I asked only to serve God and humanity.

Please pray for us lest in our humanness we stray from the path that God has lit before us.

Eternal Memory!
O Son of God grant rest to Your servant among the righteous in that eternal
kingdom with Your saints!

Bishop Thomas Mar Makarios, founder of the Mission Society of St Gregorios
of India, died February 23, 2008 at the hospital in England where he had
been since an automobile accident (January 5, 2008). This is a great loss to
our small mission, but also to the whole Orthodox Church.

"In the abodes of the just, in the habitations of the righteous, and in the
congregations of the elect, who of old were pleasing unto You, grant, O
Lord, through Your loving-kindness, rest and delight to this Your servant
Thomas Mar Makarios Thirumeni, who has departed and journeyed to You, where
the saints rejoice, so that with them he may offer You glory and praise now
and at all times forever and ever. Amen."
