<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">In the name of the Father, the Son and the
Holy Ghost.</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">There are blessed or tragic moments when we
can see a person revealed to us in a light with a depth, with an awesome
beauty which we have never suspected before.</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">It happens when our eyes are open, at a
moment of purity of heart; because it is not only God Himself Whom the pure in
heart will see; it is also the divine image, the light shining in the
darkness of a human soul, of the human life that we can see at moments when
our heart becomes still, becomes transparent, becomes pure.</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">But there are also other moments when we
can see a person whom we thought we have always known, in a light that is a
revelation. It happens when someone is aglow with joy, with love, with a
sense of worship and adoration. It happens also when a person is at the
deepest point, the crucifying point of suffering, but when the suffering
remains pure, when no hatred, no resentment, no bitterness, no evil is mixed
to it, when pure suffering shines out, as it shone invisibly to many from the
crucified Christ.</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">This can help us to understand what the
Apostles saw when they were on the Mount of Transfiguration. They saw Christ
in glory at a moment when His total surrender to the will of the Father, His
final and ultimate acceptance of His own human destiny, became revealed to
them. Moses and Elijah, we are told, stood by Him; the one representing the
Law and the other one representing the Prophets: both have proclaimed the
time when salvation would come, when the Man of suffering will take upon
Himself all the burdens of the world, when the Lamb of God slain before all
ages would take upon Himself all the tragedy of this world. It was a moment
when in His humanity Christ, in humble and triumphant surrender, gave Himself
ultimately to the Cross.</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Last week we heard Him say that the Son of
God will be delivered in the hand of men, and they will crucify Him, but on
the third day He will rise. At that moment it became imminent, it was a
decisive point, and He shone with the glory of the perfect, sacrificial,
crucified love of the Holy Trinity, and the<br />
responsive love of Jesus the Man, as Saint Paul calls Him. The Apostles saw
the shining, they saw the divine light streaming through the transparent
flesh of Christ, falling on all the things around Him, touching rock and
plant, and calling out of them a response of light. They alone did not
understand, because in all the<br />
created world man alone has sinned and is blind. And yet, they were
shown the mystery, and yet, they entered into that cloud which is the divine
glory, that filled them with awe, with fear, but at the same time with such
exulting joy and wonder!</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Moses had entered that cloud and was
allowed to speak to God as a friend speaks to a friend; he was allowed to see
God passing by him, still without a name, still without a face, and now, they
saw the face of God in the Incarnation. They saw His face and they saw His
glory shining out of tragedy. What they perceived was the glory, what they
perceived was the wonder of being there, in the glory of God, in the presence
of Christ revealed to them in glory. They wanted to stay there forever, as we
do at moments when something fills us with adoration, with worship, with awe,
with unutterable joy, but Christ had told them that the time has come to go
down into the valley, to l e a v e the Mount of Transfiguration because this
was the b e g i n n i n g of the way of the Cross, and He had to be merged
into all that was tragic in human life. He brought them down into the valley
to be confronted with the agony of the father whose child could not be cured,
with the inability of the disciples to do anything for this child, with the
expectation of the people who now could turn to n o — o n e but Him — that is
where He brought them.</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">And we are told that He had chosen these
three disciples because together, in their togetherness they held the three
great virtues that make us capable of sharing with God the mystery of His
incarnation, of His Divinity, of His crucifixion, to face His descent into
hell after His death and to receive the news of His resurrection: the faith
of Peter, the love of John, the righteousness of James.</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">There are moments when we also see
something which is beyond us, and how much we wish we could stay, stay
forever in this blissful condition; and it is not only because we are
incapable of it that we are not allowed to stay in it, but because the Lord
says, You are now on the Mount of Transfiguration, you have seen Christ ready
to be crucified for the life of the world — go now together with Him, go now
in His name, go now, and bring people to Him that they may live!</span><o:p></o:p><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">This is our vocation. May God give us
faith, and the purity of heart that allows us to see God in every brother and
sister of ours! Didn't one of the Desert Fathers say, He who has seen his
brother has seen God’? — and serve one another with love sacrificial, with
the exulting joy of giving our lives to one another as Christ gave His life
for us. Amen.</span><o:p></o:p><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The blessings we have received from our chapel at Cambridge Place in Madison came to an end in December 2014. This. after long discussions about the mission in Madison, changes in membership over the last few years and the financial hardships felt by many, it was decided that the chapel was too much to continue in a rented suite. It was a Sunday of mixed feelings for those that came to the chapel for the last services. They also stayed to help pack up the larger items for storage. Thank you to all the fine servants, especially Robb and his truck!</div>

<em><span style="font-size: large;">Memorial for the departed servant and patriarch HH Moron Mor Ignatios
was held at Holy Transfiguration Chapel on March 23, 2014. May his
memory be eternal!</span></em>
<br />
<br />
Here is the sermon of Fr. John Brian:
<br />
<br />
Servant of All
<br />
<br />
On March 21, 2014, HH Moron Mor Ignatios I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch
and all the East departed from this world. At the request of the
Patriarch, memorial prayers were said in all churches.
<br />
<br />
This memorial focus gave an opportunity to talk about the need,
purpose and the nature of hierarchy in the Christian Church from the
beginning centuries.
In Holy Orthodoxy, the hierarchy in its form, substance, spirit and
symbolism have been kept intact to the present era.
<br />
<br />
Fr. John Brian gives a short sermon on the issues of leadership,
paraphrasing the great work of St. John Chrysostom "On the Priesthood"
which was written from St. John's refusal to be consecrated Patriarch
of Constantinople in the 4th Century.
<br />
<br />
May the memory of LL HH Moron Mor Ignatios I Iwas be eternal! May he
pray for us, asking for the Lord's mercy and the fruits of faith in
all our lives.
<br />
<br />
Fr. John-Brian speaks to further spiritual development and
encouragement in another short inspirational sermon.
<br />
<br />
Please pray for Fr. John Brian who remains committed to us in the
continuing development of Christian Spirituality.
<br />
<br />
This sermon uses and refers to scripture readings appointed by the
Syrian Orthodox calendar and was given on Sunday, March 23, 2014 by
Fr. John-Brian Paprock at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission
Chapel, Madison, Wisconsin.
Please pray for our mission chapel and all our spiritual helpers.

Also this sermon was posted late:
<br />
Whom Does It Serve?
<br />
<br />
If Lent is the great preparation, whom does it serve?
<br />
<br />
Fr. John Brian gives a short sermon on the issues of service and temptation. "Selfishness is the major source of our struggles," he
says.
He brings up the temptations of Jesus Christ during the 40-day fast
<br />
after His baptism.
<br />
<br />
"May God fill us His love. For whom? For self? No for serving others,"
Fr. John Brian encourages us.
Fr. John-Brian speaks to further spiritual development and
encouragement in this short inspirational sermon.

<br />1.Ransomed For All<br />
<br />
From the Epistle of St. Paul to Timothy is a curious use of the word "ransom." <br />
1Timothy 2: "...[God] who desires all should be saved [through one mediator Jesus Christ] who gave Himself as a ransom for all." <br />
Usually a ransom is padi to a kidnapper or terrorist who make demands for something or someone held hostage.<br />
Fr. John Brian takes this dramatic notion that a ransom was paid for us to give a short yet deeply and spiritually significant sermon about the special relationship we have with God.<br />
This is a sermon in continnuation of the Syrian church's celebration of the Cross. <br />
Please pray for Fr. John Brian who continues to encourage us in the continuing development of Christian spirituality. <br />
This sermon uses and refers to scripture readings appointed by the Syrian Malankara calendar and was given on Sunday, October 13, 2013 by Fr. John-Brian Paprock at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Mission Chapel, Madison, Wisconsin. <br />
Please pray for our mission and help us as you are able. <br />

<br />2. You Lack One Thing...<br />
<br />
In Mark, Chapter 10, Jesus Christ is presented with the problems of those that want to follow Him, but do not. In this instance, the issue presented is wealth.<br />
Fr. John Brian gives a homiletic sermon on the real issue of possessions and wealth, how it is a quick test of humility which is neded to follow.<br />
It is our attachment to wealth, to things, that keep us bound to this world and unable to rise to heaven. But we are very attched to our things. Fr. John Brian brings the example of Papa Nicholas, a 19th Century Greek priest, who demonstrated great piety.<br />
This episode to Jesus saying, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get to heaven..."<br />Of course, in Mark's version, an explanation of sorts is given by Jesus.<br />
Then in the appointed Epistle, 1 Thessalonians, St. Paul exhorts us in chapter 4:3-4 - to "keep [our] possesions in sancitification and honor." Fr. John Brian helps us understand this and then compares sexuality to financial issues to help in our understanding.<br />
"You are taught by God to love one another." 1 Thessalonians 4:9<br />
"With God all things are possible." Mark 10<br />
This is a sermon in continuation of the Syrian church's celebration of the Cross. <br />
Please pray for Fr. John Brian who continues to encourage us in the continuing development of Christian spirituality. <br />

<br />3. Great is This Mystery<br />
<br />
"Truly great is this divine mystery of righteousness..." 1 Timothy 3:16<br />
Fr. John Brian's mentor Archbishop John passed from this earthly existence on October 26, 2013. This sermon includes tribute and reflections on "Bishop John."<br />
As Fr. John Brian relates, "He helped me understand the importance of Orthodox ministry in this world."<br />
This is tied into the Gospel reading from Matthew 5 and 1 Timothy Chapter 3.<br />
"Mystery is profound understanding that we are inadequate to comprehend all of what God is and all of what God does.... IN the sacraments of the Church, we participate in this [divine] mystery.... This mystery is revealed to us in the flesh." Listen to more of Fr. John Brian says in this sermon <br />
Please pray for Fr. John Brian who continues to encourage us in the continuing development of Christian spirituality. <br />

It is always an honor to welcome new members of the body of Christ through the sacrament of Holy Baptism and Chrismation (Holy Muron) during this auspicious time.<br />
<br />
Our mission was so honored on January 27, 2013 by welcoming Sofiamaryam through Holy Baptism.<br />

His Eminence spoke at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, Madison, on Saturday night. First, he offered memorial prayer for His Holiness Abune Paulos of the Ethiopian Church who passed on August 16. His Eminence then spoke about the Orthodox Church in Syria, telling of the Belt of St. Mary and other relics of St. Thomas the Apostle that were kept at the Syrian Church in Homs. They have been moved to safety due to the violence there. He reported his own family is safe in a town near the border with Turkey. H.E. did a great job of weaving together current events, our particular church tradition, and the current events of contemporary Syria. Afterwards we had a short coffee hour. Many thanks to Father Micheal Vanderhoef of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church for his hospitality and kindnesses. (continued below)<br />

His Eminence attended Qurbana (Qurbono) at the mission chapel on Sunday. He was encouraging in comments about the mission and spoke further about St. Mary. His Eminence said that Holy Transfiguration Misson "successfully blends and includes multiple cultural influences and elements (i.e. Indian, Ethiopian, etc.) into its worship/liturgy service, which makes for a truly unique experience." He also congratulated the mission for "warmly embracing a diverse group of worshippers who may have come from different religious or spiritual backgrounds before coming to the Orthodox faith."
